Brussels, Chocolate Everywhere
MARY’S
A novice to Belgium’s gourmet treats, I let an eager employee at Mary’s give me the history and rundown – Mary’s was first. Then, she showed me several premium 20-piece boxes. I opted for the jar of hot chocolate and was so upset (still upset) later that day I didn’t take her up on buying the pack of dark chocolates they plop in to add that extra...umph. Learn from this. Get all the ingredients you need to make rich Belgian hot cocoa at home.
AND EVERYWHERE ELSE…
Two or three gourmet chocolate shops are on every block. Most of it travels well and the truffles I was given for free were perfect. Imagine my face when I heard that two Belgians asked us to bring them back Butterfingers. Twix it is.
CHOCOLATE ON WAFFLES
We were at Veganwaf every day, even the day we argued. They were that tasty, so trying any other place would have been a big risk.
Soft. Warm. DENSE. Chocolate? Rich. Order the waffle with dark chocolate and strawberries.
CHRISTMAS IN THE MALL
Galeries Royales Saint Hubert was less than 5 minutes on foot from Pillows Hotel. Huge nutcrackers looking out of storefronts, lights, festive displays, red, clothing shops, jewelry stores, and accessories. All of this complemented the main industry, chocolate. It’s where I found Mary's and other brands with bowed-up gift boxes. The prettiest one? Around 50 euros. ‘Twas the season!
